Applied Lessons, Internships and Practicum

Students are required to take Applied Lessons in voice, acting.  In addition, they may elect to take Applied Lessons in directing, producing and staging.  Internships and Practicum are accomplished in local, regional and international theatres.  At least one of the internships/practicum must be completed in a cross-cultural context.

 

Principles and Practice of Music Pedagogy

I.  Course Description

The course surveys current educational ideas, methods and techniques, repertoire, and resources involved in the consistent application of pedagogical principles to the instruction of their specific instrument.

Pre-Requisite:  MUE 302. Learning in Music

II. Course Objectives.   As a result of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Research and compare pedagogical models of instruction;
  2. Present an annotated listing of repertoire for their principle instrument;
  3. Assess available pedagogical resources, including standard technology media tools;
  4. Describe the concepts of instructional sequencing, and behavior modification.
  5. Articulate career options, including entrepreneurial approaches, in music pedagogy;
  6. Define a philosophy of music education based on a biblical world view, employing consistent pedagogical principles.

Business Practice for Music Entrepreneurs

I.  Course Description

This course is an overview of business practices for the music entrepreneur, designed primarily with the privately-owned and operated music business in mind.  Topics include administrative process, basic accounting techniques including bookkeeping and budget preparation, government-sponsored opportunities and responsibilities for small businesses, marketing strategies and techniques for the self-employed instructor and artist, and ethical issues for the Christian pedagogue in music business.

Pre-Requisite:  MAT 201, 211 or 216; MPD Principles and Practice of Music Pedagogy

II. Course Objectives.   As a result of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Outline a business model for a private, music business venture that is consistent with a biblical world view;
  2. Demonstrate proper accounting procedures for a small business;
  3. Identify government-sponsored opportunities, regulations, and tax laws and procedures that correspond to the operation of a small music business;
  4. Design a marketing portfolio that articulates the strategy and techniques necessary to launch and sustain a music business;
  5. Define the ethical and spiritual issues that create tension for a music entrepreneur attempting to start a small business.
