Communicators, grounded in a biblical worldview, pursuing the mandate to proclaim Christ to society – what an amazing opportunity . . . and urgent need! Lancaster Bible College, intentionally responding to the call, is proud to announce the introduction of a new Communication major.
Cultural values are influenced by the media. LBC is choosing to strategically raise up a generation of communicators able to shape and mold the media from a biblical worldview.
Researchers, such as the Barna Group, implore the Church to address the urgency. In a recent survey they pointed out that “communication” topped the list of five significant ways that pastors are shaping ministries in new ways. Joining the call are global ministries and non-profits attempting to discover creative communication bridges to their target group. Now, more than ever, communicators with their fingers on the pulse of biblical values and cultural relevance are needed to communicate the mission and values of organizations working to advance the Gospel.
Fall 2011! LBC will launch its new Communication major with concentrations in Media Writing and Electronic Media (E-Media). The program of studies is unique, led by the Arts and Sciences Department but structured to take advantage of a cross-curricular, inter-departmental education. The initial offering combines the expertise of the Arts and Sciences Department with the practical experience of the Worship & Performing Arts.
Communication majors begin with a study of media ethics, theory, and practice. This core lays the foundation for effective career placement as well as further study in specialized communication fields at the graduate level. With the essential learned, students then choose an emphasis in either Media Writing or E-Media. Internships, hands-on training and professors who are, first and foremost, mentors characterize the major as it seeks to train the traditional and non-traditional student.
Support for the major includes LBC’s strong commitment to placing cutting-edge technology in the hands of the student. From recent technological upgrades in current facilities to the new Student Learning Commons (expected completion, May 2012), LBC will offer a true 21st Century program.
Part of the innovation of the Communication major is the diversity of the available emphases.
Communication: Media Writing
Writing for news media, marketing, and web-based applications highlights the emphasis administered by the Arts and Sciences department—a historic endeavor for LBC as the A&S department launches its first major. Students will examine media as a conveyor of cultural ideas, refining their skills to write on social issues.
Communication: E-Media
Live sound and video with production and post-production instruction in all venues of e-media makes this emphasis stand out in the crowd. “All venues” includes web-based and live stage strategies.
The Class of 2015! A new generation of global communicators trained in a biblical worldview, equipped to impact the world for Christ.
